Oh, you’re a freelance writer? How’s unemployment going? PDF Print E-mail

I have personally discovered an interesting phenomenon I’ve only read about: if you quit your day job to pursue full time writing, you are viewed as unemployed.

People start asking things like “Now that you’re not working, what are you doing with your time?” or “How is unemployment treating you?” or “I bet you’re getting a lot of housework done now that you aren’t really working”.

As a beginning full time freelance writer, I have a big challenge: to make money from something I love doing.  The concern is how fast I can make that income flow into the house, especially in an economy that is perhaps less than stellar.

The truth is that time must be invested in writing, marketing, connecting, applying, querying, creating, and even more writing and that none of these bring in money right away.  So the labor is there right now.  And the income is on the way, a mantra I repeat daily and know to be true.

In the meantime, I’ve been watching a lot of daytime TV, eating bonbons and pints of Ben and Jerry, napping, getting pedicures, hanging out at the coffee shop for hours, dealing with barking dogs, and going to the store to buy tons of toilet paper.

Yep, that's my life alright.

Now don’t bother me. I need to take a nap.

My dogs

My very own barkers, Hunter and Lacey.  They appear so quiet right there.

More musings - oh yes.

But I'm not a dog person...

One of these is not like the others:  Beagles, Facebook, Brussels Sprout, Sun, Chocolate

  1. So true~ Well said, my friend!
  2. Thank you for reading and commenting, Sara. Of course the barking dogs and toilet paper consumption are actually true :P
  3. *rotfl* I get that ALL the time. Even though I haven't made writing a full time career, people do treat me like an unemployed slacker. Just because I don't have a "proper" job, doesn't mean I'm not working hard!
